What makes a good YouTube thumbnail?

A good thumbnail sticks to four elements: a high-contrast background, one main subject, an optional short line of text, and subtle branding. Anything more turns into noise that blends into the homepage.

The thumbnail is seen for a fraction of a second at a small size. Its only job in that moment is to stop the scrolling thumb, and simple high-contrast images do that far better than crowded ones.
